La Vega continues to be one of the most attractive cities for domestic tourism of Dominicans, despite not being lined with beautiful beaches or lavish resorts. The main economic activity of the province is farming. Among the most common of the locally produced agricultural products are rice, coffee and snuff, bananas, cassava, beans, pigeon peas, corn, fruits, and other minor items.

The most important cultural event in the city is the carnival, which is the most attractive and elegant holiday of the country. This carnival has been declared national heritage and is held every weekend of February at Las Flores Park.
