Kenzi’s Point of View
I had just finished fixing my eyeliner and purple sparkly eye shadow again, for about the fifth time, when I heard a car pull in the driveway. I peeked out the window and saw a crappy, old car, and Max getting out of the driver’s side and heading up the walk to my door. I grabbed my purse, threw my cell phone in it, and sped down the stairs as the doorbell rang.
“I got it Mom”, I yelled as I rounded the corner into the mudroom. Too, late…Mom got there first.
“Hello, and who are you?” Mom asked in her formal, polite voice.
“Hi, I’m Max, Kenzi’s boyfriend. Is she here?” Max replied as he shook my mom’s hand. I decided to save him from the Inquisition and make my appearance.
“Max, hey, ready to go?” I asked grabbing his hand and pulling him towards the still open door, ignoring the little thrill that went through me when he said the word “boyfriend”. Although, maybe I shouldn’t ignore it, maybe Madison is right and it is time to move on and give Max a chance. He does seem like a nice guy, and not a poser, which I am quite adequately trained at spotting thanks to Loser. I glanced at my mom’s face before continuing to tug Max. She had her “oh Kenzi, why can’t you be normal and popular and have a normal and popular boyfriend like Loser was” face on.
“Kenzi, I want to speak with this boy more before you just run off with him. I don’t even know him.” Mom said, grabbing my arm before we could make our escape. Max halted, and turned to face her. I silently shot daggers at him with my eyes. He smirked at me, and raised his eyebrow…a very appealing look on him.
“I would love to get to know you too ma’am; however, if Kenzi and I don’t leave now we will be late. Maybe I could come over for Sunday dinner sometime? I can definitely see why Kenzi is so beautiful being your daughter.” Max smoothly said, retaking my hand and leading me through the door to his car, but not before I saw my mom’s face drop into a shocked, but very pleased smile. What, did he go to charm school or something?
“Here you go apple.” Max said, drawing me from my thoughts, as he opened the passenger door for me and helping me into the car.
“Apple?” I asked, attempting to raise one eyebrow like he did. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t successful though.
“Well, I haven’t called you that name yet, now have I? And, you know, you’re the apple of my eye.” he answered with a grin.
“Oh, wow! You are so pathetically corny.” I laughed at him. He merely chuckled back before shutting my door and heading over to his side. He sat down in the driver’s seat and started the car, still grinning like a dork…a really hot dork in skinny leg black pants, an Alesana concert shirt, and black and white checkered Converse. He hadn’t really done much with his hair, then again he had the kind of hair that didn’t need much maintenance and naturally fell just right, flopping over into his left eye from time to time.
“You know butter muffin, I know I’m hot, but there is no need to drool.” Max smirked, breaking me out of my checking him out.
“I’m sure I don’t know what you mean,” I replied, while secretly glancing in the mirror to see if there was any drool. “So…where are we going Mr. Smarty-pants?”
“I could tell you, but then I would have to kill you.” he answered with a wink, reciting my words back to me from the other day. “So, your mom seems pretty nice.”
“Yeah, she is nice, even though we are complete opposites.”
“You know, now that I think of it, I’m fairly certain that I glimpsed a picture of a girl who looks strikingly similar to you, except she might have had blonde hair…and, gasp, a cheerleading outfit on!” Max stated, of course finding the one subject that I didn’t want to discuss.
“How did she find that? I thought that she surely wouldn’t have thought to look inside the cat’s litter box…” I contemplated.
“You hid the picture in your cat’s litter box? Care to explain?”
“I don’t know you well enough for that horror story yet.” I replied.
“Okay, fair enough. You have a cat?” Max asked, effectively changing the subject. He is so sweet. Grrr, he is so going make me start feeling things that I told myself I wasn’t going to consider anymore!
“ Yes, I do have a cat, well kitten actually. I rescued her from an animal shelter. She is about three months old, and is completely black. Her name is Midnight.” I smiled, thinking of my baby.
“Aww, she sounds so sweet. I want to meet her! I love cats. I am definitely not much of a dog person.” Max exclaimed. A guy who likes cats instead of dogs. Yep, cue the stunned silent audience tape, I’m starting to like him!
“Alright, don’t have a spastic fit. You can come in and meet her when you bring me back from our date.” All of a sudden Max got a huge grin on his face. “What? Do I have something on my face?”
“No, you look absolutely dazzling, as per usual. It’s just that, you just admitted that you consider this to be a date too! You like me…you want to kiss me…” Max sang.
“Haha, Sandra Bullock, could you just watch the road before you wreck and ruin the evening? Are we almost there?” I whined.
“We are here!” he answered. Really, wow, I must have been watching him longer than I thought. I turned and looked out of my window to see a huge Ferris Wheel among other carnival rides, and tons of people milling around.
“You brought me to the town carnival?” I asked incredulously as I got out of the car.
“Of course, and don’t even pretend that you aren’t excited. Who doesn’t love the carnival? Besides, I have to win you a giant stuffed animal. It is in the dating handbook, you know.” He replied as he joined me in front of the car. He was right, I did love carnivals. All of the lights and smells of cotton candy and funnel cakes, and the sounds of laughter from all directions, yep, I loved it all.
“You’re right, let’s go!” I grabbed his hand and yanked him toward the entrance so we, or I should say he since he refused to let me pay, could buy our tickets.
The carnival was SO MUCH FUN!! I made Max take me on every single ride. We went on the Octopus, the tea cup spinning ride, the haunted house, and the fun house; and we also ate about every single thing that they had on the menu too! We played the games and he won me a ginormous pink and purple polka dotted dragon, which I dubbed Mr. Spotty. Max forced me to go on the roller coaster, too, even though I told him repeatedly before he dragged me onto it that I hated roller coaster with a passion.
“Kenzi, stop being a ‘fraidy cat. I am going to be sitting next to you the whole time. I will even hold your hand.” Max said as we stepped into the car and the attendant placed the metal bar over our laps.
“Fine, fine, but if I vomit in your lap then all I can say is I told you so.” Everyone was then seated in the cars, and the ride started. As we entered the dark tunnel I reached over and grabbed Max’s hand, feeling tingles run up my arm from his touch. I felt him give my hand a gentle squeeze of reassurance and looked up to see a kind smile on his face and a slight blush on his cheeks. “Thanks.” I said, right before it felt like the floor dropped out from under us as the ride took its first terrifying dip in the tracks.
“Kenz, my hand is literally numb.” Max said as he pried my fingers from around his as we exited the roller coaster ride.
“I told you so! What did I say? I said, ‘No Max, I hate roller coasters. They scare me, so I am NOT going on that one!’ And did you listen to me? No, you most certainly did not.” I replied, a little embarrassed by how scared the ride had made me. I’m just glad I didn’t pee my pants.
“You were definitely right Kenzi. I will never make you ride a roller coaster again. I sincerely apologize.” Max said, bowing and kissing my hand like someone out of an old time movie. I blushed and giggled, giving him a peck on the cheek. Somehow this boy just seems to get past my carefully assembled defenses.
“Well, you are forgiven Maxie Poo! Have we ridden all of the rides yet?”
“Nope, we still have the Ferris Wheel left. And we have just enough time before our curfew too.” Max then grabbed my hand, laced our fingers, and lead me to the line for the ride. As we were waiting patiently in line for the previous riders to get off the wheel, one of the last people I wanted to see on my date just happened to grace us with his presence…Tom.
“Well, well, well, if it isn’t the cute emo couple.” he sneered, coming up to stand behind us with his cheerleader of the week. I was just about to come up with a smart reply, but Max beat me to it.
“Aww, you think I’m cute Tom? That’s really sweet, but you aren’t really my type.” Max retorted with a smirk. I laughed out loud and sent Max a grateful smile.
“You better watch yourself Cooper.” Tom smarted back, taking a step closer to Max.
“Or what Tom? I think you better take a step back and leave Kenzi and I alone before I make your eyes match.” Max threatened. Tom looked like he was about to hit Max, but luckily all of the couples from the Ferris Wheel had left the ride and the attendant ushered us onto the nearest bench seat.
“Are you okay?” Max asked as we got situated and pulled the safety belt down over us.
“I’m fine. Thank you for standing up for us.” I replied with a smile.
“Not a problem. That guy really gets on my nerves.” he answered. The ride started then, and we began to circle up high above the carnival grounds. The view was so spectacular up here. I leaned my shoulder into Max, and he put his arm around me. Wait a minute…make your eyes match? Did Max know something about Tom’s black eye?
“Hey Max, do you know something about Tom’s black eye?” I asked, pulling back enough so I could look into his face, but not enough to leave his embrace. He began to squirm in his seat.
“Why would you ask that?” he wondered.
“Well, you told Tom you would make his eyes match, and you are fidgeting so I know that you are hiding something Max Cooper! Spill it mister.”
“Madison may have mentioned a few things in the class that we have together without you about how you and Tom have some history.” he sighed. Ugh, Madison, why did you feel that he would need to know about that? That stuff is private information!
“What happened between you two anyway?” Max asked, breaking me out of my inner rant. Hmm…so she didn’t tell him everything, that’s good to know.
“Well, you know that picture you saw of me as a blonde cheerleader?” I asked him. He nodded for me to go on. “I used to be a cheerleader, and popular, and dated Tom for a while. I know, I know, my judgment was a bit skewed at the time based on his hot jock status. In the end, however, he turned out to be a different guy than he tries to convince people that he is. He cheated on me, among other things, and I caught him. I broke up with him, realized that the whole popularity thing was annoying and superficial, and ditched my bleached blonde hair and decided to just be me.” I told him, giving him all of the story that he needed to know at this point.
“What a jerk! Maybe I should give him that matching black eye.” Max exclaimed, clearly upset over what Tom did.
“Max, no! Please promise me that you won’t get into any more fights with him. It isn’t worth it.” I pleaded. He turned in his seat to look me in the eyes, and gently took hold of my chin.
“Kenzi, you are definitely worth it. Since you asked me, though, I won’t fight with him anymore. I promise.” With that, he lowered his mouth to mine and kissed me sweetly. That was the absolute best kiss I have ever had! It seemed like with that one kiss he was trying to communicate with me all of his feelings that he had for me, and let me tell you, I was feeling them right back for him. We broke apart from the kiss for air, and he smiled happily at me, eyes shining. I smiled right back and kissed him again. After that we cuddled for the rest of the ride, and then made our way back to the car so he could take me home. Once we reached my house he opened the door for me and walked me to the front door of my house.
“Have a good weekend Kenzi. Can I call you and/or text you?” he asked, giving me puppy dog eyes.
“Of course you can!” I said and grinned at him. He leaned in and gave me a goodnight kiss before making his way back to his car. He even waited until I was inside the house before he drove away with a honk. That was the best date ever!
“How was your date honey?” my mom asked as she came into the room, smiling at me.
“It was really great Mom. I think I really like him.”
“Well, by the look on your face right now I would say that you really like him too.” Mom said with a laugh. I giggled, extremely happy.
“Night sweetheart.” I made my way up the stairs and did my normal before bed routine. After I got out of the shower and climbed into bed I heard my phone beep, signaling a text message. I opened the message and read: Sweet dreams pumpkin pie. I smiled goofily and did a little happy dance in the bed. I replied and told him sweet dreams too. Wow, I think for the first time in my life I was actually looking forward to school on Monday!
