~ 136th winter carnival ~

The Saint Paul Festival and Heritage Foundation’s 136th Saint Paul Winter Carnival will run for 10 days – all day on weekends and evenings during the week. From Friday, Jan. 28 through Sunday Feb. 6, 2022, the festival will attract 250,000 people from Saint Paul and beyond to celebrate winter in Minnesota.

Landmark Center, located in the heart of downtown Saint Paul, the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, and businesses throughout the city will be venues for event festivities, which include ice carving competitions, family-friendly artistic and educational activities, and much more!

The festival has expanded each year to provide new programming that reflects changing demographics of the community. Landmark Center features free entertainment activities from diverse cultures: music and dance by local artists, hands-on crafts, and food and merchandise booths from around the world.

Being an anniversary year, and making adjustments due to city regulations, enhanced virtual and drive-thru experiences are being created to ensure families can participate in this year’s fun while continuing to make safety a top priority. The 2021 Winter Carnival will be an exuberant celebration of winter in our state capital!

A bit of history

The tradition of celebrating from the end of January until mid-February has been around for a long time! In Quebec City, the world’s snow capital, the first major winter carnival made its debut in 1894.

A population often faced with harsh winters decided to put on a snow festival to warm their hearts. Interrupted by the two world wars and the Great Depression of 1929, the Carnival resurfaced sporadically until the second half of the century. In 1954, with a view to promoting the economic development of the Old Capital, a group of business people relaunched the festivities and chose Bonhomme as the event’s representative. The first edition of the Québec Winter Carnival took place in 1955 and became a must-attend event for the people of Quebec City and the impetus behind the city’s winter tourist activities. Today, the Québec Winter Carnival is undeniably a major winter event and continues to be a driving force in Quebec’s winter life.
